Why you need a career vision and strategy

Have you ever had a vision of where you would be working and what you would be doing at this point in your life? Maybe you are fulfilling this career dream and it is not as you envisioned, or perhaps it has altered over time or is yet to be realised!

You may have some clarity on what you want to be doing as you move forward or you may be completely lacking in direction.

Talk to anyone you admire who has reached great career success and you will find that they dared to dream about their vision and are driven to do something about it. It is unlikely that there was instant success but keeping the dream in mind is the backbone of several highly successful businesses. An example of this is the successful entrepreneur, Ruslan Kogan, who set up Australia’s biggest online shopping site.

At a talk to marketing students, Ruslan mentioned that he had a clear vision and mission of providing a great online service for his customers at a reasonable price. He had over 60 failed businesses before (Links to an external site.) was created. It was his vision to create his business that kept him driven to success.

Making a career change?

For people looking to make a career change from scratch, we encourage you to think big. The world is full of different career possibilities that are available to you should you choose to explore them. You might not be ready to lock in any particular career paths right now, but you can certainly entertain career dreams and explore without the pressure of making a selection!

Your career dreaming could include anything from working as a ski instructor in the Swiss Alps to running your own chocolate factory in Belgium, owning a scuba diving business on the Great Barrier Reef, to a TV sitcom writer or the CFO of Google! The possibilities are endless.

At some point, however, we need to wrap some reality around these career dreams, but for now, just keep dreaming and documenting all the possibilities.

Benefits of creating your career dream

People who have a goal in life and are prepared to work towards it, often find that their life takes the path that they want. The secret? It starts with knowing who you are and having a clear, consistent and authentic goal that you can easily describe to  other people.

Remember that success is an individual story. Watch this ten-minute video.
